“If you don’t consider yourself a marketer first, you’re going to be poor.”
Jarring, right?
These were the exact words spoken to me over 5 years ago at a class I was attending. I had raised my hand to express my frustration with finding my social media + marketing balance as a new business owner, and honestly I was expecting a little sympathy from the class instructor. He spoke those words and my eyes about popped out of my head. He repeated himself.
“You’re a marketer first, and a hairstylist second. If you don’t consider yourself a marketer first, you’re going to be poor.”
With a slightly bruised ego after being mildly roasted in front of the class, I trusted what he said and went back to work with a marketing mindset paired with my “it’s time to grind” mentality. You know what happened?
My bank account boomed. My books were full. My business was majorly successful.
I leaned into marketing well before I could hire a full team. I kept marketing at the forefront of my mind and scheduled times into my quadruple booked schedule to make sure it happened. Marketing was something in my business I NEVER skimped on. This is why even though I’m a CEO and I have an incredible CMO + marketing team for Harper Ellis Hair Co., it will be rare for me to miss a marketing meeting. Being involved is how I’ve built this empire!
Where Do I Begin?
So what is my advice to you if you don’t know where to start with marketing yourself behind the chair?
1. Niche down. Don’t try to sell to everyone. You aren’t the “perfect stylist” for everyone. Create what I call a “Dream Client Avatar” and build a plan on how you would market to them. Ask yourself these questions to get started:
1. How old is this client? What is their name?
2. Where do they work? What do they do in their spare time?
3. How do you dress to appeal to this client?
4. What kind of work do you share on Instagram to appeal to this client?
5. Does the salon you’re at appeal to them?
You might want to create 2-3 of these dream clients to get a well rounded idea of who you’re marketing to, and to figure out what changes you need to make to attract this client! This is also a good way to measure up your current clientele and see what you’re doing right and what you want to do differently!
2. Plan out your content. Good content doesn’t happen by accident. Batch your work, be mindful of the quality of content you’re producing, and use a content calendar to stay on task.
3. Show your face in your marketing! We are in a world where people are exposed to 10k+ pieces of marketing materials/ads every day. People are tired of buying from faceless businesses, they want to buy from PEOPLE! The most valuable aspect of your personal brand is YOU! No one can replicate YOU.
